In Catholic usage, “gaze” in contemplative prayer means a heart-attentiveness like faith looking at Jesus, not mainly something done with the eyes.
The Catechism defines contemplation as:
“a gaze of faith, fixed on Jesus. ‘I look at him and he looks at me’” (CCC 2715)
It also says contemplative prayer is:
“a gaze of faith fixed on Jesus … a silent love.” (CCC 2724)
So, “gaze” = faithful attention and loving focus on Jesus—the way you look with your heart at someone you trust and love (even when prayer is quiet).
