Today, October 16, the Catholic Church honors Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647–1690), a French religious sister and mystic who dedicated her life to Jesus Christ. She is especially remembered for spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a powerful reminder of Christ’s immense love and mercy for humanity.
The Life of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque
Saint Margaret Mary was born on July 22, 1647, in Burgundy, France. From her childhood, she showed a deep love for God and a special devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. She found great comfort in prayer, especially during periods of suffering and difficulty.
After the death of her father, Margaret Mary and her family experienced serious hardships. Through these trials, she turned increasingly to Jesus, finding strength in His presence and trusting in His loving care.
In 1671, she entered the Visitation convent at Paray-le-Monial, France. There, she devoted herself to a life of prayer, humility, and service. During her religious life, she reported receiving visions of Jesus in which He revealed His Sacred Heart as a sign of His burning love for humanity.
In a well-known revelation in 1675, Jesus showed her His Sacred Heart, surrounded by flames of love and crowned with thorns, expressing the sorrow caused by humanity’s indifference and sins. She understood that Christ desired a deeper devotion to His Sacred Heart, especially through prayer, Eucharistic adoration, and receiving Holy Communion.
At first, some people doubted her experiences, and she endured misunderstandings and opposition. However, with the support of her spiritual director, Saint Claude de la Colombière, devotion to the Sacred Heart gradually spread.
Saint Margaret Mary encouraged the faithful to contemplate the love of Jesus, make reparation for sins, receive the Eucharist devoutly, and respond to Christ’s love with sincere conversion.
She died on October 17, 1690, at Paray-le-Monial. She was canonized by Pope Benedict XV in 1920. Her life continues to inspire Catholics throughout the world to seek refuge in the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
