Feast Day: August 14
Today the Catholic Church honors Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe, a Franciscan priest, missionary, publisher, and martyr whose life was marked by an extraordinary love for Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Born in Poland in 1894, Maximilian Kolbe entered the Franciscan order and became a priest deeply devoted to spreading the Catholic faith. He had a particular love for the Immaculate Virgin Mary and founded the Militia of the Immaculata, an apostolic movement dedicated to bringing souls closer to Christ through Mary.
Saint Maximilian also used modern means of communication to evangelize, publishing Catholic newspapers and magazines and establishing a large religious publishing apostolate. His dedication to evangelization eventually earned him recognition as a patron of journalists and communications.
A Life of Courage and Sacrifice
During the Second World War, Saint Maximilian was arrested by the Nazis and eventually imprisoned at Auschwitz concentration camp.
In July 1941, after a prisoner escaped from the camp, the Nazis selected ten prisoners to die by starvation as a punishment. One of the condemned men, Franciszek Gajowniczek, cried out for his wife and children.
Saint Maximilian stepped forward and offered to take his place.
The request was accepted, and Maximilian was sent to the starvation bunker with the other condemned prisoners.
Rather than allowing despair to overcome them, he encouraged the prisoners to pray. According to accounts of his final days, he remained calm and prayerful, leading the others in hymns and prayers.
After surviving longer than the others, Saint Maximilian was killed by a lethal injection on August 14, 1941.
His final sacrifice became one of the most powerful witnesses of Christian charity in the twentieth century.
Saint Maximilian Kolbe and Love
Saint Maximilian’s life reminds us of the words of Christ:
“No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”
His final act was not simply an act of courage. It was an extraordinary expression of Christian love and self-sacrifice.
He willingly gave his life so that another man might live.
Saint Maximilian teaches us that holiness is not merely about prayer and devotion. It is also about being willing to love others when that love requires sacrifice.
A Special Patron for Our Difficult Times
Saint Maximilian Kolbe is especially inspiring for people facing fear, persecution, suffering, loneliness, or difficult circumstances.
He lived through war and imprisonment, yet he continued to place his trust in God.
His witness reminds us that even when we cannot control our circumstances, we can still choose how we respond to them—with faith, courage, charity, and trust in God.
Prayer to Saint Maximilian Kolbe
Saint Maximilian Mary Kolbe, faithful servant of Jesus Christ and courageous martyr of charity, pray for us.
You who remained faithful to Christ in the midst of suffering and persecution, obtain for us the grace to remain faithful when we face trials and difficulties.
Teach us to love Jesus more deeply and to place our lives into the hands of Divine Providence.
Help us to have courage when we are afraid, strength when we are suffering, and compassion toward those who are in need.
Saint Maximilian, who gave your life for another, teach us to love without counting the cost.
Pray especially for those who are persecuted for their faith, for prisoners, for families suffering because of war, and for all Christians who are experiencing hardship.
May your example inspire us to live with greater faith, greater courage, and greater love.
