Feast Day: August 11
Today the Catholic Church celebrates Saint Clare of Assisi, a faithful disciple of Christ and the foundress of the Poor Clares.
Born in Assisi around 1193, Clare came from a noble family but felt called to give up a life of comfort and wealth in order to follow Jesus more completely. Inspired by the example and preaching of Saint Francis of Assisi, she devoted herself to a life of prayer, humility, poverty, and service to God.
Clare became the leader of a community of women at San Damiano. She eventually wrote a Rule of Life for her sisters, becoming the first woman in the Church to write a Rule for religious women. Her community became known as the Poor Clares.
Saint Clare remained faithful to her calling even through illness, hardship, and opposition. Her life reminds us that true riches are found not in possessions, but in Christ.
Her example invites us to live more simply, trust more deeply in God, and make prayer the center of our lives. The Church’s readings for her memorial emphasize knowing Christ above all things and pressing forward toward the goal of eternal life.
A Lesson from Saint Clare
Saint Clare teaches us that we do not need to have everything the world offers in order to have a rich and meaningful life. When Christ is at the center of our hearts, we possess the greatest treasure.
Today, ask Saint Clare to help you grow in faith, simplicity, humility, and love for Jesus.
Prayer to Saint Clare
Saint Clare of Assisi, faithful follower of Christ, pray for me today.
Help me to place God above all earthly things and to trust Him in every circumstance. Teach me to seek the peace that comes from prayer and to remain faithful when life becomes difficult.
May your example inspire me to love Jesus more deeply, serve others with humility, and walk faithfully toward heaven.
Saint Clare of Assisi, pray for us.
Amen.
Saint Clare of Assisi, pray for us!
