Feast Day: July 23
On July 23, the Catholic Church honors St. Bridget of Sweden, a wife, mother, widow, mystic, and foundress whose deep love for Christ inspired countless people to grow in holiness. She is one of the six patron saints of Europe and is remembered for her devotion to the Passion of Christ and her tireless efforts to renew the Church.
A Holy Wife and Mother
St. Bridget was born in Sweden around the year 1303 into a noble family. From an early age, she developed a profound love for God and often experienced spiritual visions.
She married Ulf Gudmarsson, and together they had eight children, including St. Catherine of Sweden. Bridget faithfully fulfilled her vocation as a wife and mother while encouraging her family to live according to the Gospel. Their home became known for its charity, prayer, and care for the poor.
A Life Dedicated to God
After her husband’s death, Bridget devoted herself entirely to God. She founded the Order of the Most Holy Savior, commonly known as the Bridgettines, whose members were dedicated to prayer, contemplation, and works of charity.
Throughout her life, St. Bridget received many mystical revelations concerning the life and Passion of Jesus Christ and the sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These writings, known as the Revelations of St. Bridget, have inspired generations of Catholics to meditate more deeply on Christ’s suffering and God’s infinite mercy.
She also courageously called both civil rulers and Church leaders to greater holiness and faithfulness, always seeking the renewal of the Church through prayer and repentance.
A Lasting Legacy
St. Bridget spent her final years in Rome, where she prayed, cared for the poor, and encouraged pilgrims from across Europe. She died in 1373, and her body was later returned to Sweden.
She was canonized by Pope Boniface IX in 1391. In 1999, Pope St. John Paul II proclaimed her one of the Patron Saints of Europe, recognizing her enduring witness to faith, family life, and Christian unity.
Prayer
O glorious St. Bridget of Sweden, faithful wife, loving mother, holy religious, and devoted servant of Christ, obtain for us the grace to love God above all things and to follow His holy will in every circumstance.
Teach us to meditate on the Passion of Jesus, to remain faithful in our vocations, and to serve those in need with generous hearts. Pray for families, married couples, widows, pilgrims, and all who seek to grow in holiness.
Through your powerful intercession, may we persevere in faith, hope, and charity until we are welcomed into the joy of God’s eternal kingdom.
St. Bridget of Sweden, pray for us!
