Blessed Teresa of St. Augustine (1737–1794), born Marie-Madeleine-Claudine Lidoine, was the prioress of the Carmelite convent in Compiègne, France. During the French Revolution, when religious communities were suppressed and the Church was fiercely persecuted, she courageously led her fellow Carmelites in remaining faithful to Christ.
The sixteen Carmelite nuns offered their lives to God, praying that their sacrifice would bring peace to France and an end to the violence of the Reign of Terror. On July 17, 1794, they were taken to the guillotine in Paris.
Eyewitnesses recalled that the sisters sang hymns and renewed their religious vows as they approached their execution. One by one, they peacefully surrendered their lives for Christ. Their extraordinary witness of faith, courage, and forgiveness deeply moved those who saw their martyrdom. Just ten days later, the Reign of Terror came to an end.
Pope St. Pius X beatified the Carmelite Martyrs of Compiègne in 1906. Their steadfast faith reminds us that no earthly power can overcome those who place their complete trust in God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, You gave Blessed Teresa of St. Augustine and her companions the grace to remain faithful to Christ even unto death. Through their courageous witness, strengthen us to persevere in our faith, to trust in Your providence during times of trial, and to remain faithful to Your will in all things.
Help us to love You above all else and to bear witness to the Gospel with courage, charity, and hope.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
