Feast Day: July 16
Today the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, one of the Church’s most beloved Marian feasts. This celebration honors the Blessed Virgin Mary as the patroness and spiritual Mother of the Carmelite Order and commemorates her loving protection over all who seek her intercession.
Mount Carmel, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea in the Holy Land, has long been associated with prayer and God’s presence. It was on this mountain that the Prophet Elijah defended the worship of the one true God and called the people of Israel back to faithfulness. Centuries later, Christian hermits settled on Mount Carmel, dedicating their lives to prayer and placing themselves under the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary. From this community grew the Carmelite Order.
According to Carmelite tradition, on July 16, 1251, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, an English Carmelite, and presented him with the Brown Scapular. She encouraged him and the Carmelite Order, promising her maternal care to those who faithfully wore the scapular as a sign of their devotion and commitment to following Christ. The Brown Scapular remains one of the Church’s most cherished sacramentals, reminding the faithful to live lives of prayer, holiness, and trust in God’s grace.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel invites us to imitate her humility, obedience, and complete surrender to God’s will. She teaches us that true discipleship is found in listening to God’s Word, remaining faithful in times of trial, and leading others to her Son, Jesus Christ.
For Christians around the world, and especially for those living in the Holy Land, this feast is a joyful reminder that Mary continues to accompany the Church with her motherly love. From Mount Carmel, her spiritual mantle extends to all who seek her protection and confidently ask for her prayers.
Reflection
Our Lady of Mount Carmel reminds us that the Christian life is a journey of prayer, trust, and faithful perseverance. Just as Mary remained close to Jesus throughout His life, Passion, and Resurrection, we are called to remain close to Him in every circumstance.
The Brown Scapular is more than a devotional object—it is a sign of our desire to belong to Christ through the loving care of His Mother. It invites us to imitate Mary’s virtues, grow in holiness, and place our confidence in God’s mercy each day.
As we honor Our Lady of Mount Carmel today, let us renew our commitment to prayer, seek her maternal protection, and entrust our families, our communities, and the whole world to her loving care.

O Blessed Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, we thank you for your loving care and constant intercession.
Lead us always to your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to live with faith, hope, and charity, and teach us to embrace God’s will with the same humility and trust that marked your life.
Protect us beneath your maternal mantle, strengthen us in times of trial, and guide us safely along the path of holiness. May we always remain faithful to Christ and one day rejoice with you in the glory of heaven.
