Saint of the Day: St. Kateri Tekakwitha

St. Kateri Tekakwitha (1656–1680), lovingly known as the “Lily of the Mohawks,” was the first Native American to be canonized by the Catholic Church. Born in present-day New York to a Mohawk father and an Algonquin Christian mother, Kateri endured great suffering from an early age. At the age of four, a smallpox epidemic claimed the lives of her parents and brother, leaving her an orphan. Although she survived, the disease left her with weakened eyesight and facial scars.

As a young woman, Kateri became deeply attracted to the Christian faith through the witness of Jesuit missionaries. Despite strong opposition from her relatives and her community, she was baptized at the age of twenty and took the name Kateri, the Mohawk form of Catherine.

Her decision to embrace Christianity brought ridicule, hardship, and even persecution. Refusing to marry, she dedicated her life entirely to Jesus Christ, spending long hours in prayer, attending Mass whenever possible, and caring for the sick and elderly. Eventually, she fled her village and traveled more than 200 miles to the Catholic mission of St. Francis Xavier near Montreal, where she could freely practice her faith.

Kateri became known for her extraordinary holiness, humility, purity, and love of the Holy Eucharist. She practiced acts of penance and charity while living a hidden life devoted to God. She died on April 17, 1680, at only twenty-four years of age. Witnesses reported that within minutes of her death, the scars from smallpox disappeared, leaving her face radiant and beautiful.

Pope Benedict XVI canonized St. Kateri Tekakwitha on October 21, 2012. Today she is honored as the patron saint of Native Americans, Indigenous peoples, ecology, the environment, and those who are ridiculed or rejected because of their faith.

Despite rejection, suffering, and loneliness, she remained steadfast in her commitment to God. Her life encourages us to choose Christ courageously, remain faithful amid trials, and seek holiness through prayer, purity, and charity.
