St. Veronica Giuliani was a remarkable Italian Capuchin Poor Clare nun, mystic, and one of the Church’s greatest examples of love for the Passion of Christ. Born Ursula Giuliani in Mercatello, Italy, she developed a deep love for God from an early age despite losing her mother when she was only seven years old.
At the age of seventeen, Ursula entered the Capuchin convent in Città di Castello and took the name Veronica, in honor of the holy woman who compassionately wiped the face of Jesus on His way to Calvary.
Throughout her religious life, St. Veronica embraced prayer, humility, penance, and complete trust in God’s will. She experienced extraordinary mystical graces, including visions of Christ, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the saints. In 1697, she received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, which she bore with great humility and obedience. She also received the mystical crown of thorns and experienced profound spiritual trials.
Her superiors instructed her to keep a detailed spiritual diary. Over the years she wrote more than 22,000 pages describing her journey of faith, love, suffering, and union with God. These writings remain a spiritual treasure for the Church.
Despite her extraordinary mystical experiences, St. Veronica was known for her kindness, obedience, charity, and practical wisdom. She eventually became abbess of her convent, guiding her sisters with gentleness and holiness until her death on July 9, 1727. She was canonized by Pope Gregory XVI in 1839.
St. Veronica teaches us that true holiness is found in faithful daily prayer, humble service, and a willingness to unite our sufferings with those of Jesus. Her life reminds us that God’s greatest works are often accomplished through hidden acts of love and complete surrender to His will.
