Patron Saint of: Youth, young women, purity, victims of violence, and forgiveness
St. Maria Goretti is one of the youngest saints ever canonized by the Catholic Church and is remembered for her remarkable purity, courage, and extraordinary forgiveness.
Maria was born on October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, Italy, to a poor but deeply faithful Catholic family. After her father’s death, Maria helped her widowed mother care for the family and their home. Despite her young age, she was known for her cheerful spirit, deep love for Jesus, and devotion to prayer.
At the age of eleven, Maria was attacked by a young man named Alessandro Serenelli, who attempted to force her into sin. Courageously defending her purity and fidelity to God, Maria resisted. Before she died from her injuries the following day, she forgave her attacker, saying that she wanted him to be with her in Heaven.
Maria’s forgiveness profoundly changed Alessandro’s life. After years in prison, he experienced a conversion, sought God’s mercy, and later publicly testified that Maria’s forgiveness had led him back to the Catholic faith. He was even present at her canonization in 1950.
St. Maria Goretti was canonized by Pope Pius XII before one of the largest crowds ever gathered for a canonization ceremony. Her mother, Assunta Goretti, attended the ceremony, making it the first canonization witnessed by a saint’s parent.
Today, St. Maria Goretti reminds us that holiness is possible at any age. Her life teaches us the beauty of purity, unwavering trust in God, and the transforming power of forgiveness. She continues to inspire Christians around the world to choose virtue, mercy, and faithfulness to Christ even in the most difficult circumstances.

O glorious St. Maria Goretti, you remained faithful to Christ with heroic courage and forgave those who wronged you with a heart full of mercy. Help us to love God above all things, to live lives of holiness and purity, and to forgive others as Christ forgives us. Pray that we may always trust in God’s grace and faithfully follow Him throughout our lives.
