St. Thomas More was born in London, England, in 1478. He was a brilliant lawyer, scholar, author, and devoted Catholic. Known for his wisdom and integrity, Thomas served as Lord Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII.
Despite his success in public life, Thomas More remained deeply committed to his Catholic faith. He was a loving husband, devoted father, and a man of daily prayer. He believed that no earthly power should come before obedience to God.
When King Henry VIII declared himself head of the Church in England, Thomas More refused to support this decision because it went against his conscience and the teachings of the Catholic Church. His fidelity to the truth came at a great cost.
Thomas was imprisoned in the Tower of London for refusing to take the oath recognizing the king’s authority over the Church. Even in prison, he remained peaceful and steadfast in faith.
In 1535, St. Thomas More was sentenced to death for treason. Before his execution, he famously declared, “I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first.”
St. Thomas More was canonized in 1935. Today, he is the patron saint of lawyers, statesmen, and politicians.
His life reminds us to remain faithful to God, defend the truth, and follow our conscience with courage.
