On May 14, the Catholic Church honors Saint Matthias the Apostle, the disciple chosen by the Apostles to replace Judas Iscariot after the Resurrection of Jesus.
After the Ascension of Christ, the Apostles gathered in prayer and chose Matthias to become one of the Twelve Apostles. Although little is known about his life, Saint Matthias is remembered for his faithfulness to Christ and his dedication to spreading the Gospel.
According to Christian tradition, Matthias had followed Jesus from the beginning of His public ministry and witnessed His Resurrection. After receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, he preached the Gospel courageously and eventually suffered martyrdom for the Christian faith.
Saint Matthias reminds us that God calls ordinary people to great missions and that faithfulness and perseverance are precious in the eyes of God.
Prayer:
Saint Matthias the Apostle, pray for us, that we may faithfully follow Christ and courageously witness to the Gospel in our daily lives. Amen.
