Saint Rose Venerini (1656–1728) was an Italian nun and educator who dedicated her life to the Christian formation of young girls and women. Born in Viterbo, Italy, she originally desired a contemplative religious life, but God called her to a different mission—teaching and educating the poor.
At a time when many girls had little access to education, Rose saw the importance of forming both the mind and the soul. She opened free schools where young women could learn reading, catechism, and Christian values. Her work helped transform families and communities through faith and education.
Despite opposition and many hardships, Saint Rose trusted completely in God’s providence. Her courage and perseverance led to the spread of many schools throughout Italy. She later founded the Religious Teachers Venerini, a congregation devoted to the education and spiritual formation of youth.
Saint Rose Venerini is remembered for her wisdom, humility, and zeal for evangelization through teaching. She believed that educating young people in the faith could renew society and bring souls closer to Christ.
She was canonized in 2006 by Pope Benedict XVI.
Prayer:
