Saint of the Day: Saint Julie Billiart: Apostle of Joy and Trust in God

On April 8, the Church honors Julie Billiart, a woman of deep faith, courage, and joy who devoted her life to teaching and trusting completely in God’s providence.

Her Life

Saint Julie Billiart was born in 1751 in Cuvilly, France. From a young age, she showed a strong love for God and a desire to help others grow in faith.

As a child, she memorized large portions of the catechism and began teaching other children, especially the poor, about God. Her life, however, was marked by suffering. After a traumatic event, she became paralyzed and remained bedridden for many years.

Yet even in her suffering, Julie never lost her trust in God. She often repeated:

“How good is the good God!”

A Life of Faith and Mission

Despite her illness, Julie continued to teach and guide others spiritually from her bed. During the time of the French Revolution, she faced danger and persecution, yet remained steadfast in her faith.

In time, through God’s grace, she was miraculously healed. With renewed strength, she founded the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, a religious congregation dedicated to the education of girls, especially the poor.

A Spirit of Joy

Saint Julie is remembered for her joyful spirit and unwavering trust in God’s goodness.

She encouraged others:

  • To trust in God’s providence
  • To remain joyful even in trials
  • To spread the love of Christ through education and service

Her life is a powerful reminder that holiness is possible even in suffering.

Her Legacy

Saint Julie Billiart died in 1816, leaving behind a vibrant community that continues her mission around the world.

She is especially known as a model for:

  • Teachers
  • Those who suffer
  • Anyone seeking to trust God more deeply

Did You Know?

  • She was paralyzed for over 20 years before being healed
  • She founded a major teaching order for girls
  • Her famous words were: “How good is the good God!”

Prayer to Saint Julie Billiart

O God,
who filled Saint Julie with trust and joy
even in suffering,
grant us the grace to rely on Your goodness
in all circumstances.

Help us to live with faith and courage,
and to bring Your love to others.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
