On April 9, the Church honors Casilda of Toledo, a woman whose life was transformed by compassion, faith, and love for the poor.
Her Life
Saint Casilda was born into a Muslim royal family in Toledo during the 11th century. Despite her privileged upbringing, she developed a deep compassion for Christian prisoners who were suffering under harsh conditions.
Moved by mercy, she secretly brought them food and assistance, risking her own safety.
A Miracle of Charity
One day, as she carried bread hidden in her garments to give to the prisoners, she was stopped and questioned. When asked what she was carrying, she answered, “Roses.”
By God’s grace, when her garments were opened, the bread had miraculously turned into roses.
This miracle protected her and revealed God’s favor upon her acts of charity.
Conversion and New Life
Later in life, Casilda became seriously ill. Seeking healing, she traveled to a Christian region, where she was miraculously cured.
This experience led her to embrace the Christian faith fully. She was baptized and chose to live a life of prayer and solitude, dedicating herself entirely to God.
A Life of Holiness
Saint Casilda spent the rest of her life as a hermit, devoted to prayer, penance, and trust in God. Her journey from royal comfort to humble holiness is a powerful testimony of conversion and grace.
She died in peace, leaving behind a legacy of charity and faith.
