Day 39 of the Great Lent: Good Friday

“It is finished.” (John 19:3)

Today the Church falls silent. No bells ring. No festive music fills the air.

The altar is bare, and our hearts feel the weight of what Love was willing to endure for us.On this Good Friday, we stand at the foot of the Cross with Mary, the beloved disciple John, and the few faithful souls who did not run away.

We look up at Jesus — bruised, bloodied, and dying — and we hear Him say with His last breath: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”How can this terrible day be called “Good”?

Because on this day, Jesus did not just suffer — He chose to suffer for you and for me.

Every sin we have ever committed, every wound we carry, every failure and regret… He took it all upon His shoulders. He allowed Himself to be crushed so that we could be healed. He let His heart be broken so that ours could be made whole. In the Garden of Gethsemane He had already prayed, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” On the Cross, He finished what He began.

He drank the cup of suffering to the very last drop — not because He had to, but because He loved us that much.

Today is not a day for long explanations or many words. It is a day to simply be with Him.

  • Sit quietly before a crucifix if you can.
  • Kiss the feet of Jesus on the Cross, even if only in your heart.
  • Tell Him your sorrows, your sins, your fears, and your gratitude.
  • Let the tears come if they want to. He understands tears.

A short prayer you can pray throughout the day:

Lord Jesus, crucified for me,
I gaze upon Your Cross and I am speechless.
You did this for me — even when I was still a sinner.
Thank You for Your infinite mercy.
I offer You my whole life today: my joys and my pains, my strengths and my weaknesses.
Into Your hands I commend my spirit.

Help me to love as You loved — to the end.
Amen.
