On March 31, the Church honors Benjamin the Deacon, a courageous deacon and martyr who gave his life for proclaiming the Gospel.
His Life
Saint Benjamin lived during the 5th century in Persia, a time when Christians often faced persecution under the ruling authorities. As a deacon, he was dedicated to preaching the Word of God and strengthening the faithful.
At one point, Benjamin was imprisoned because of his Christian faith. Through the intervention of a Roman ambassador, he was released on the condition that he would no longer preach about Christ.
However, filled with zeal and love for the Gospel, Benjamin could not remain silent. He continued to proclaim the name of Jesus Christ, knowing the risks.
A Courage That Could Not Be Silenced
Saint Benjamin’s life is a powerful testimony to the truth that faith cannot be hidden. For him, preaching Christ was not just a duty—it was a necessity.
When he was arrested again, he was commanded to renounce his faith. He refused.
Rather than deny Christ, he chose to remain faithful, even in the face of suffering and death.
Martyrdom and Victory
Saint Benjamin died a martyr around the year 424. His death reminds us that true victory is not found in earthly safety, but in eternal fidelity to God.
He is honored as a witness to the power of courage, perseverance, and unwavering faith.
