His Life
Saint John Climacus was born around the year 579, likely in the region of Palestine or Syria. At a young age, he left the world behind to enter the monastic life at Mount Sinai, where he devoted himself entirely to prayer, silence, and ascetic discipline.
He lived under the guidance of a holy elder for many years, growing in wisdom and virtue. After his mentor’s death, John withdrew into solitude, living as a hermit for nearly 40 years. During this time, he deepened his union with God through prayer and contemplation.
Eventually, he was called back to community life and became the abbot of the monastery at Mount Sinai, where he guided many monks on the path to holiness.
The Ladder of Divine Ascent
Saint John is best known for his spiritual masterpiece, The Ladder of Divine Ascent, which describes the Christian life as a journey of 30 steps toward God.
Each “step” represents a virtue to be acquired or a vice to be overcome—from renouncing the world to attaining perfect love. His teaching is deeply rooted in the Gospel and offers practical guidance for overcoming temptation and growing in holiness.
