Saint of the Day: Saint Óscar Romero

Saint Óscar Romero was a courageous bishop and martyr who lived in the 20th century. Born in El Salvador in 1917, he became Archbishop of San Salvador during a time of great injustice, violence, and suffering in his country.

At first, he was seen as a quiet and cautious man. But after witnessing the persecution and killing of innocent people, especially the poor and defenseless, his heart was transformed. He began to speak boldly, defending human dignity and calling for peace, justice, and respect for life.

From the pulpit, he preached the Gospel with courage, urging soldiers and leaders to follow God’s law above all. He became a voice for the voiceless, standing firmly with the oppressed, even though it placed his own life in danger.

On March 24, 1980, while celebrating Mass, Saint Óscar Romero was killed for his faith and his witness to truth. He offered his life as a shepherd who would not abandon his flock.

He was later recognized as a martyr and canonized, reminding the world that true faith requires courage, love, and a willingness to stand for justice rooted in Christ.

Did You Know?

Saint Óscar Romero is often called the “voice of the voiceless” because he spoke out for those who had no one to defend them.

Prayer of the Day

Saint Óscar Romero,
faithful shepherd and martyr for truth,
help us to stand with courage for what is right.
Teach us to love the poor,
to defend the dignity of every human life,
and to follow Christ with unwavering faith.
Pray for us, that we may be instruments of peace
and witnesses of God’s love in the world.
Amen.
