Saint of the Day: Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo

Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo was a zealous missionary bishop and a great shepherd of souls in the New World. He was born in Spain in 1538 and was a learned lawyer before being unexpectedly chosen to serve as Archbishop of Lima in Peru.

Though not yet a priest at the time of his appointment, Turibius accepted God’s call with humility and was quickly ordained. He traveled to Peru, where he devoted his life to serving the people, especially the native populations.

As archbishop, he tirelessly visited his vast diocese, often traveling on foot through difficult terrain. He worked to defend the dignity of the indigenous people, protect them from injustice, and teach them the Catholic faith. He learned local languages so he could preach the Gospel more effectively.

Saint Turibius was known for his deep love of the sacraments, his care for the poor, and his dedication to reforming the clergy. He established seminaries, promoted proper catechesis, and ensured that the faith was taught with clarity and truth.

He is also remembered for confirming many faithful, including future saints such as Saint Rose of Lima and Saint Martin de Porres.

Saint Turibius died in 1606 after a life of tireless service to Christ and His Church.
