New US ambassador to Mexico begins tenure with visit to Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine

CV NEWS FEED // Within hours of arriving in Mexico on May 15 to assume his new diplomatic role, US Ambassador Ronald Johnson honored tradition by visiting the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, accompanied by his wife.

“Upon arriving in Mexico, as people of faith, my wife Alina and I visited Our Lady of Guadalupe to ask for wisdom and strength in this responsibility for the benefit of both nations,” Johnson posted on his official X account, alongside photos from the visit.

In visiting the basilica just two days after his swearing-in, Johnson followed a tradition past US ambassadors have observed: starting their service by honoring Mexico’s deeply rooted Catholic heritage and the profound cultural significance of the shrine.

The Virgin Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego at the site in 1531. The basilica draws millions of pilgrims each year, with the largest crowds arriving on Dec. 12 for the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a day that holds deep religious and cultural meaning in the country.
