CV NEWS FEED // Conservative think tank Heritage Foundation has launched an online database surveying almost 900 classical schools across the United States, aiming to provide parents, teachers, and legislators with information on the trending alternative to public schools.
“Classical education may be ‘old school,’ but its renaissance in the U.S. is among the fastest-growing — and most promising — developments in K–12 education today,” Heritage states on its webpage about the database, adding that it provides a landing page for all those interested in learning more about many of the schools within the revival.
Crystal Kate, senior advisor to Heritage President Kevin Roberts, noted in an April 10 X post that the schools listed “teach actual education — Great Books, Latin, logic, virtue.”
The database has 894 schools and has options to search schools by state, zip code, grade, operational model, school schedule, and religious affiliation. There is also an option to filter for schools that teach Arabic, Greek, Hebrew, and Latin.
Heritage provides information on when the school opened, its student population size, and details on if the school is a hybrid, non-traditional, or typical 5-day model as well. It also provides information on the school’s curriculum, such as whether it uses the Socratic Method, requires memory work, and whether the school is “low tech,” meaning the school’s website indicates it is committed to low use of screens in classrooms. The majority of the database’s information on the schools comes from the schools’ websites.
Heritage also has a link for feedback and recommending schools the think tank should review.
