CV NEWS FEED // The White House Correspondents’ Dinner will not feature a comedic performance this year after scheduled comedian Amber Ruffin spoke about how she planned to call out the Trump administration, calling the administration “a bunch of murderers.”
Axios reports that the annual dinner for journalists traditionally includes comedic performance, and President Donald Trump did not attend the event during his first term.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff and Cabinet Secretary Taylor Budowich posted a video clip of Ruffin on his X account March 28, and asked, “What kind of responsible, sensible journalist would attend something like this? More importantly, what kind of company would sponsor such as [sic] hate-filled and violence-inspiring event?”
“I care that, like, you’re kind of a bunch of murderers,” Ruffin said when discussing her performance for the April 26 dinner.
She added that she had received instructions to tease both sides of the political spectrum, but that “under no circumstances” would she be doing so.
Amber also said that Trump’s supporters, “wanted that false equivalency that the media does. They want that. It feels great, it makes them feel like human beings. But they shouldn’t get to feel that way ‘cause they’re not.”
White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) President Eugene Daniels announced in a March 28 email that Ruffin’s performance was canceled, and that there would be no comedic performances during the event, Axios reports.
Daniels wrote, “At this consequential moment for journalism, I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists.”
