Eighth bishop of Camden celebrates Mass of Thanksgiving for his ministry, 12 years in diocese

CV NEWS FEED // On the eve of his 80th birthday and his retirement from active ministry, Bishop Dennis J. Sullivan of the Diocese of Camden, New Jersey, celebrated Mass in celebration of his vocation and time spent as the eighth bishop of his diocese, according to the Catholic Star Herald.

The March 16 Mass of Thanksgiving, celebrated at Our Lady of Hope Parish, St. Agnes Church in Blackwood, marked nearly 54 years since Bishop Sullivan was ordained to the priesthood. He became the bishop for the Diocese of Camden in 2013.

CatholicVote previously reported that Pope Francis named coadjutor Bishop John Williams, from Minnesota, to succeed Bishop Sullivan.

The Catholic Star Herald reported that during the homily, Bishop Sullivan reflected on the gospel reading of the Transfiguration (Matt. 17:1-9). He noted that during his ministry he had “witnessed God’s glory and been in God’s presence” in the work of the priest, religious, and lay while “on the roads of South Jersey, through each of our six counties of the Diocese.”

Bishop Sullivan also voiced his hope for what legacy he is leaving after serving in the Diocese of Camden.

“My hope,” he said, “is that my ministry as the Bishop of Camden for these past 12 years has drawn people to the love of God, and to Jesus Christ, whose love was displayed on the Cross and in the Resurrection.”
