CV NEWS FEED // The Archbishop of Kansas City has filed an emergency motion asking the local district court to order the satanists planning a worship ritual at the state Capitol to return any consecrated Eucharistic hosts and wine in their possession.
The group is planning a satanic worship ritual — a so-called “black mass” — at the Kansas State Capitol on March 28, at which they intend to desecrate the Eucharist and the Precious Blood, according to the court motion filing seen by CatholicVote.
The motion asserts that the consecrated Eucharistic hosts and wine are the property of the Catholic Church, and they are believed to currently be in the possession of the Grotto Society (known as the Satanic Grotto), Michael T. Stewart, and/or Travis L. Roberts. None of them are Catholic.
They are not permitted to possess the consecrated hosts and wine, and rather “intend to desecrate property in a manner that is directly contrary to Catholic Church teachings, doctrines, beliefs, and interests in such property,” the motion states.

According to the motion, the defendants are “boasting” both online and to the Kansas Catholic Conference Executive Director Chris Weber that they have “secured a consecrated host’ and plan to desecrate it.”
The motion notes that the archbishop is required to state “the estimated value” of the property of concern.
“It is the conviction of the Catholic Church, presented in its doctrinal teachings, that the Consecrated Hosts and Wine are in fact the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Jesus Christ, present under the form of bread and wine,” the motion states. “To Catholics, the Consecrated Host and Wine are the most sacred, respected, and revered thing in the world. Accordingly, the Consecrated Host(s) and any amount of Consecrated Wine are of priceless and incalculable value.”
The motion asks for an emergency hearing and urges the court to promptly require the group to return the consecrated hosts and wine to Archbishop Naumann.
Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly stated March 12 that her office is limited in what it can do to stop the satanic worship event because it is technically a protest and therefore protected by the Constitution. In the same statement, Kelly announced that all protests at the Capitol March 28 must take place outdoors.
The archbishop’s motion states that after Kelly’s announcement, the event’s organizer Stewart texted Weber, “stating that he intends to defy Governor Kelly’s decree, and will enter the Capitol and ‘kill Jesus’ (meaning the Consecrated Host and Wine). Thus, there is an important government and public interest in allowing Archbishop Naumann to reclaim his property before it is used to violate Governor Kelly’s order, to damage Church property, or otherwise promote unrest inside the Capitol.”
The motion argues that the satanic worship event is not constitutionally protected.
“[T]he Constitution protects free speech and the free exercise of religion — not theft, vandalism, or intentionally harmful conduct involving another person’s property,” it reads. “Defendants’ stated intentions go beyond the protections of the First Amendment, particularly when, for Catholics, the property at issue is sacred.”
