Pope Francis accepts resignation of Camden, New Jersey, bishop, appoints coadjutor bishop of same diocese as successor

CV NEWS FEED // Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Bishop Dennis Sullivan of the Diocese of Camden, New Jersey, according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

The USCCB reports that the Pope appointed Bishop John Williams, 50, who is currently the coadjutor bishop of Camden, to be Bishop Sullivan’s successor. 

The resignation and appointment were announced March 17 in Washington, D.C., by Cardinal Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Bishop Sullivan, 80, had submitted his resignation from active ministry when he turned 75 on March 17, 2020, as canon law requires. 

According to Catholic Review,  Bishop Sullivan ministered as a priest and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of New York from 2004 to 2013, when he was appointed to the Diocese of Camden in 2013. ministered. He celebrates the 54th anniversary of his priesthood this year.

The Diocese of Camden states that Bishop Williams will be its ninth bishop. Bishop Williams was born in Minnesota in 1974 and ordained to the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis in 2002. On Jan. 25, 2022, the feast of the Conversion of St. Peter, he was ordained to the episcopate. He served as auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis until he was appointed as coadjutor bishop of Camden on May 21, 2024. 

Bishop Williams has also served as the chaplain of the Minnesota House of Representatives.
