Trump ‘strongly considering’ sanctions, tariffs on Russia until peace deal with Ukraine

CV NEWS FEED // President Donald Trump stated Friday morning that he is “strongly considering” sanctions and tariffs against Russia until the country reaches a peace settlement with Ukraine.

He subsequently told a reporter that in the absence of a peace deal, the war between the two neighboring Eastern European nations could escalate until it results in “World War III.”

“Based on the fact that Russia is absolutely ‘pounding’ Ukraine on the battlefield right now, I am strongly considering large scale Banking Sanctions, Sanctions, and Tariffs on Russia until a Cease Fire and FINAL SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT ON PEACE IS REACHED,” Trump stated on X and TRUTH Social. “To Russia and Ukraine, get to the table right now, before it is too late. Thank you!!!”

The same day, Trump said during an Oval Office news conference that he thinks the United States is “doing very well in negotiating with Russia.”

“But right now, they’re bombing the hell out of Ukraine,” he added. “I’m finding it more difficult, frankly, to deal with Ukraine. And they don’t have the cards. They don’t have the cards.”

A reporter asked Trump: “Why not provide Ukraine with air defenses?”

“Good question,” Trump replied. “Because I have to know that they want to settle. I don’t know that they want to settle. If they don’t want to settle we’re out of there, because we want them to settle. And I’m doing it to stop death, more important than anything else.”

“Secondarily, way down the line is the money,” continued Trump. “So we’re in for $350 billion, and Europe is in for $100 billion. They should be in for the same or more than us.”

Trump said he “watched for the last week or so what’s going on in Europe.” He stressed that the Russo-Ukrainian War “could end up in World War III if we don’t get it settled.”

Also speaking to the media in the Oval Office, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said Trump “has been crystal clear, and he’s been clear to all sides: The fighting has to stop. Both sides need to get to the table.”

On Tuesday, CatholicVote reported that the Trump administration announced it was “pausing all aid to Ukraine, including weapons already in transit or stationed in Poland, until Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy demonstrates a greater commitment to peace.”

The following day, Zelenskyy wrote on X: “I would like to reiterate Ukraine’s commitment to peace.”

“None of us wants an endless war,” the Ukrainian president added. “Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than Ukrainians. My team and I stand ready to work under President Trump’s strong leadership to get a peace that lasts.”
