CV NEWS FEED // Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) chief Elon Musk accused the Biden administration of ordering the mass slaughter of 150 million egg-laying chickens, leading to soaring egg prices.
Musk posted on X Thursday, “There was an insane slaughter of 150 million egg-laying chickens ordered by the Biden administration,” confirming statements made by both President Donald Trump and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
At his address to Congress Tuesday, Trump said that his administration inherited “an economic catastrophe and an inflation nightmare” from the Biden administration.
“Their policies drove up energy prices, pushed up grocery costs, and drove the necessities of life out of reach for millions and millions of Americans,” he said. “We suffered the worst inflation in 48 years.”
“Joe Biden especially let the price of eggs get out of control… and we’re working hard to get it back down,” Trump added.
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, egg prices peaked during Joe Biden’s presidency, soaring to an average of $4.82 per dozen in January 2023.
Karoline Leavitt first addressed the egg price surge at a January White House press briefing, saying, “When Joe Biden was in the Oval Office – or upstairs in the residence sleeping, I’m not so sure – egg prices increased 65% in this country.”
“The Biden administration and the Department of Agriculture directed the mass killing of more than 100 million chickens, which has led to a lack of chicken supply in this country, therefore, a lack of egg supply, which is leading to the shortage,” Leavitt said.
According to CNN, the mass slaughter of chickens was intended to prevent the spread of the avian flu. Recent reports from both the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) stated that the virus poses low risk to humans.

Kevin Hasset, Director of the National Economic Council, criticized the Biden administration’s approach on CBS News, saying, “The Biden plan was to just… kill the chickens, and they spent billions of dollars just randomly killing chickens within a perimeter where they found a sick chicken.”
“What we need to do is have better ways, with biosecurity and medication and so on, to make sure that the perimeter doesn’t have to kill the chickens. Have a better, smarter perimeter,” he added.
Just last week, US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Brooke Rollins announced her agency’s plan to lower egg costs by implementing “‘gold-standard biosecurity measures’ to ensure chickens have a better chance of being protected from bird flu,” as CatholicVote reported.
“We are working with the Department of Government Efficiency [DOGE] to cut hundreds of millions of dollars of wasteful spending,” Rollins wrote in an op-ed at the Wall Street Journal. “We will repurpose some of those dollars by investing in long-term solutions to avian flu, which has resulted in about 166 million laying hens being culled since 2022.”
