Nigerian priest murdered on Ash Wednesday

CV NEWS FEED // A Catholic priest in Kaduna State, Nigeria, was murdered on Ash Wednesday by his captors just hours after being kidnapped from his residence.

Father Sylvester Okechukwu, 44, who served at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tachira, Kaura Local Government Area, was abducted on the night of March 4. The Diocese of Kafanchan confirmed his murder early March 5.

“This untimely and brutal loss has left us heartbroken and devastated,” Father Jacob Shanet, chancellor of the Kafanchan diocese, said in a statement.

According to Fr. Shanet, Fr. Okechukwu was a devoted priest who tirelessly served his parish and brought messages of peace, love, and hope to the faithful.

“His untimely death has left an indelible void within our diocesan family,” Fr. Shanet said, “and we share in the pain of his passing with his family, friends and all those who knew and loved him.”

The reason for Fr. Sylvester’s murder is “yet to be determined.” Fr. Shanet reminded the community to “remain calm and steadfast in prayer.”

“No one should take the law into their hands,” he cautioned.

Calling on the faithful to pray for the repose of his soul, the diocese invited priests, religious, and lay Catholics to offer Masses, Rosaries, and prayers for Fr. Okechukwu, “who gave his life in service to God and humanity.”
