Fatima statue to journey from Portugal to Rome for Jubilee of Marian Spirituality

CV NEWS FEED // A famous statue of Our Lady of Fatima from Portugal will be in Rome this October for the Jubilee of Marian Spirituality, according to a Feb. 27 Vatican Press Release.

The Marian Jubilee will mark the fourth time the statue has left the Portugal Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima for Rome, according to the Vatican Press Office’s release. In the past, the statue has only been moved upon the request of a pope.

The work was commissioned based on the descriptions of three Portuguese children after the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to them in 1917, as CatholicVote previously reported.

One of the bullets from the 1981 assassination attempt of Pope John Paul II is embedded in the crown. St. Pope John Paull II was shot and survived the assassination attempt on the feast of Our Lady of Fatima. The Pope later traveled to Fatima Shrine to express his gratitude after crediting her for saving his life.

According to the Shrine of Fatima website, the statue was made according to Sister Lucia’s instructions, one of the visionaries of the Fatima apparition. In 1947, the statue was crowned by the archbishop of Évora, Portugal, and traveled across 64 countries where people would come to venerate it.

Father Carlos Cabecinhas, rector of the Fatima Shrine in Portugal, commented in the press release that the statue is a source of hope and joy amidst trials.

“In this Jubilee time,” Fr. Cabecinhas said, “the Virgin of Fatima is the woman of Paschal joy, even in the painful times the world is experiencing. Once again, the ‘Lady dressed in white’ will be a pilgrim of hope.”

The Jubilee of Marian Spirituality is set for Oct. 11-12, according to the press release, and the Fatima statue will be visible during the Oct. 12 closing Mass.
