CV NEWS FEED // Founder and president of Ave Maria Radio, Al Kresta, has passed away at 73, following a short but intense battle with liver cancer.
The news of Kresta’s death on June 15 comes just three days after his family posted a message to his CaringBridge site, announcing that his cancer diagnosis had progressed beyond treatment, as CatholicVote previously reported.
In the message, his daughter, Alexis Love, expressed the family’s desire to be able to bring Kresta home for a hospice spell. “We are praying that all of the people closest to him get an opportunity to say goodbye,” she added.
Kresta was surrounded by family in his Michigan home at the time of his passing, according to reports. He is survived by his wife, Sally, their five children, and his grandchildren.
According to Catholic News Agency (CNA), EWTN President and Chief Operating Officer Doug Keck said that Kresta “was fearless in his willingness to take on tough issues both inside and outside the Church! But always with a wisdom-driven, balanced approach designed to meet the listeners where they are but never leave them there.”
“He was an inspiring figure who overcame incredible physical roadblocks to serve his God, his family and his Church,” Keck added.
CNA also reported that Dr. Scott Hahn, a biblical scholar, convert, and author, described Kresta as “one of the most deeply thoughtful and thoroughly converted men I’ve had the privilege of knowing — and calling a good friend.”
A visitation will take place for Kresta on the afternoon of June 21, and a Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, June 22 at Christ the King Church in Ann Arbor, according to the latest update Love posted to Kresta’s site.
The update requests that memorial contributions be made to Ave Maria Radio in lieu of flowers.
