Week 3 of National Eucharistic Pilgrimage Bulletin: new leadership, updates on the routes’ progress

CV NEWS FEED // The National Eucharistic Congress (NEC) recently shared several highlights from the third week of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage, along with exciting updates regarding new leadership.

According to its Week Three Bulletin, the NEC has appointed Jason Shanks, president of Our Sunday Visitor Institute for Catholic Innovation, to be its new CEO of the Congress’ operations.

NEC Board Chair Andrew Cozzens, the bishop of Crookston, Minnesota, stated in an article for Our Sunday Visitor that the board is “excited” to have Shanks as its next leader.

“The experience of Eucharistic revival, the Eucharistic pilgrimages and planning the congress has led our board to believe that the Eucharistic renewal of the church is a movement that has a strong future,” the Bishop remarked, adding:  “We are convinced that Jason Shanks has the leadership skills to bring this movement forward in the church.”

Pilgrims are currently continuing to work their way along the four pilgrimage routes towards Indianapolis, where the National Eucharistic Congress will take place next month.

Along the eastern St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Route, an estimated 1,500 Catholics joined Eucharistic processions in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where the population is roughly 2,776. The small Frederick County town is a significant location along the route. It is home to the Basilica and National Shrine of St Elizabeth Ann Seton, the route’s namesake, along with the National Shrine Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, and Mount St Mary’s University.

Along the southern St Juan Diego Route, an estimated 1,100 Catholics participated in the Eucharistic processions in Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

As CatholicVote reported last week, pilgrims on the western St Junipero Serra Route crossed Emerald Mountain in the Colorado Rockies.

Pilgrims along the northern route just completed their longest Eucharistic procession—over 10.5 miles as they journeyed from Minnesota into Wisconsin.
