Archbishop of Portland offers word of hope for those grieving especially because of Memorial Day

CV NEWS FEED // Archbishop Alexander Sample of the archdiocese of Portland, Oregon, today offered words of hope and comfort to those who are grieving.

“We just celebrated Memorial Day, and a lot of us are still in grief over the loss of loved ones, and we struggle with that… we all struggle with that when we lose somebody that we love, especially if it’s a tragic or unexpected death,” Archbishop Sample said in a video posted to his X account on May 28.

He shared that his own father passed away almost 35 years ago, but that passage of time can be hard for him to believe.

“So I would just like to offer a word of hope to all of us, including myself, about what it is, we believe: we believe that Jesus Christ suffered, died and rose again from the dead for us, so that we could have eternal life,” Archbishop Sample continued.

“And as hard as it is to say goodbye to a loved one, I would like to remind you that we’re only saying goodbye to them for a time, and that we will see them again, in the kingdom of Heaven,” he added.

The archbishop said that he is looking forward to seeing his loved ones again in Heaven, and especially meeting, for the first time, three of his grandparents who had passed away before he was born.

“I want to celebrate for all eternity with those who loved me and whom I loved in this world,” he said, concluding, “I hope that offers you just a little bit of hope if you’re in grief.”

The message of encouragement is the latest among Archbishop Sample’s many videos about the Catholic Faith, which are frequently accompanied in the caption by the hashtag or phrase, “Jesus Changes Everything.”
