CV NEWS FEED // Advocates at Pro Life Campaign, a non-denominational human rights organization in Ireland, is calling on Irish citizens to do their research on political parties’ stance on abortion as the local and European elections approach.
The annual March for Life in Dublin drew substantial crowds on May 6, where according to a Crux report, Pro Life Campaign representative Eills Mulroy told those in attendance that abortion numbers in Ireland are “soaring” under the country’s current laws.
Mulroy also announced that Pro Life Campaign would be providing a “comprehensive voter guide” in anticipation of the upcoming elections, in order to help voters decide where to cast their votes.
Irish law allows abortion procedures for pregnant women until 12 weeks. However, the government is currently stalled in a debate over whether it will implement a series of recommendations that would expand abortion.
The Department of Health commissioned Barrister Marie O’Shea in 2022 to conduct a review of Irish legislation on abortion since it became enshrined in the Eighth Amendment referendum in 2018.
In her 2023 report, O’Shea posed several recommendations. Among them is a call to remove the requirement for women to undergo a three day waiting period between her initial abortion consultation, and the abortion itself.
O’Shea also recommended decriminalizing violations of abortion law for medical professionals.
