Poll: Swing State Voters Oppose Biden’s Crackdown on Gas Vehicles

CV NEWS FEED // According to a new poll, a majority of voters in seven hotly-contested battleground states oppose the Biden administration’s proposed regulations on traditional gas-powered vehicles.

CRC Research conducted the poll on behalf of the 85 Fund, an election integrity group founded by Catholic pro-life lawyer Leonard Leo.

National Review reported Thursday that 57% of the poll’s respondents “somewhat or strongly opposed” the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) “tailpipe emissions regulation imposing stricter standards on gasoline-powered vehicles.”

Thirty-seven percent “strongly oppose” the controversial policy, National Review added:

Less than a third of respondents, or 31 percent, strongly or somewhat support the tailpipe regulation, with 10 percent strongly supportive.

These results came in response to a question that posed arguments from proponents and opponents of the regulation.

Many critics of Biden’s environmental policies have used the term “electric vehicle (EV) mandate” to refer to such policy initiatives aimed at boosting EVs over gas vehicles.

The poll surveyed 2,800 registered voters in mid-April. Its respondents were equally distributed throughout the swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

The poll also found that 57% of its respondents “strongly or somewhat oppose paying more for cars and trucks and having fewer options if it means promoting climate emissions goals,” National Review stated.

The poll found that Democrats stand alone in favor of “paying more for cars for the sake of climate goals,” according to National Review. Both Republicans and independents oppose this so-called “trade-off.”

The poll further notes that “[o]nly 7 percent of respondents are planning on buying an electric vehicle the next time they purchase a vehicle,” National Review indicated:

The interest in electric vehicles pales in comparison to the 48 percent of respondents expecting to buy a traditional gasoline or diesel-powered vehicle and 18 percent planning on buying a gasoline-based hybrid when they next purchase a vehicle.

A little over half of respondents, or 52 percent, said they are more likely to support elected officials who fight against the Biden administration’s effort to push electric vehicles onto consumers, while 29 percent would be more likely to support politicians who advocate for Biden’s electric vehicle policies.

“Responses to this question were markedly divided along partisan lines between Republicans and Democrats,” National Review’s report emphasized.
