Pakistan Catholic church teams up with medical foundation to serve poor

CV NEWS FEED // A local Catholic Church in Salik Town, a slum located in the city of Faisalabad, Pakistan recently joined efforts with Heal Foundation Pakistan to provide medical care to nearly 200 impoverished patients.

According to a recent Asia News report, the Salik Town Catholic Church opened its doors to allow the Heal Foundation to set up a free medical camp on April 28.

Medical professionals were able to provide care to 175 patients, according to the report. Five patients were diagnosed with highly contagious infectious diseases, and will receive ongoing treatment, free of charge, until they are fully recovered.

Local parish priest, Fr. Tahir Rauf, told Asia News that the community lacked a “basic health unit,” and expressed hope that the Heal Foundation’s efforts would help to reduce the current rate of disease in the slum.

“Salik Town is a poor, predominantly Christian area with some 250 households living in extreme poverty, without the means to buy medicines and pay for medical consultations,” the report stated, noting that the most common illnesses in the area are tuberculosis, diabetes, and hypertension.

Fr. Rauf praised the efforts of medical professionals and Heal Foundation team members for “serving the people like the apostles of Jesus Christ and providing their best services for the healing of poor people from different diseases.” He also stated that a second phase would take place in the near future.
