CV NEWS FEED // A petition calling on St. Joseph’s University to cancel its upcoming “drag” show amassed over 13,000 supporters in just one day.
On Monday, CatholicVote reported that the Jesuit-affiliated university in Philadelphia is set to hold its annual “drag” show Friday.
The next day, TFP Student Action published a petition condemning the show and urging St. Joseph’s President Dr. Cheryl A. McConnell to reconsider moving forward with the event.
“I am appalled that your university plans to host an immoral ‘drag show’ on April 19,” the petition states.
“The event tramples Catholic moral teaching, blurs the distinction between male and female, and causes grave scandal among Catholic students,” it continues.
“Moreover, the sinful show is a slap against Saint Joseph, the holy patron of your institution,” the petition goes on to note. “I respectfully urge you to cancel the drag show.”
The message is addressed to McConnell with “Catholic colleges that plan drag shows” carbon-copied.
The petition’s description adds: “everyone knows that drag shows celebrate the sin of lust – one of the deadly sins – and do not belong on any campus that purports to be Catholic.”
“The smoke of Satan has infected this Catholic campus, which is named after one of the greatest Saints of all time,” TFP Student Action emphasizes in the description. “We can’t stay silent.”
According to their website, TFP Student Action is “a project of the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property,” which was founded in 1973 “to resist, in the realm of ideas, the liberal, socialist and communist trends of the times and proudly affirm the positive values of tradition, family and private property.”

CatholicVote has indicated that it vehemently opposes the university’s planned event.
“‘Drag’ shows were invented by gay men to hypersexualize and mock women,” said CatholicVote Vice President Joshua Mercer.
“No Catholic university should ever host a ‘drag’ show,” he added. “This is a complete embarrassment for a university named after good St Joseph.”
