CV NEWS FEED // New reports indicate that U.S. Border Patrol released an Afghani suspected terrorist into the American interior last year.
NBC News reported that Mohammad Kharwin, now 48, “spent nearly a year inside the U.S. after he was apprehended and released by Border Patrol agents last year.”
“Kharwin was initially apprehended on March 10, 2023, near San Ysidro, California, after having crossed the Mexico-U.S. border illegally,” NBC continued:
Border agents suspected he was on the U.S. terrorist watchlist when he was apprehended because one piece of information matched a person on the list. But the agents lacked corroborating information, which officials declined to describe, that would confirm Kharwin was the person they suspected
The New York Post added that following this, “Kharwin was released under Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s [ICE] ‘Alternatives to Detention’ program.”
Per NBC, the suspected terrorist was, during this time “able to apply for asylum and work authorization and fly domestically in the U.S.”
The Post noted that nearly “a year later, the FBI notified ICE that Kharwin was a suspected member of the US-designated foreign terror group Hezb-e-Islami, or HIG.”
The Afghanistan-based HIG “is described by the National Counterterrorism Center as a ‘virulently anti-Western insurgent group’ responsible for the deaths of several US soldiers and American contractors,” the Post indicated.
In late February, ICE arrested Kharwin another time.
However, as the Post summarized, “ICE prosecutors failed to inform the Texas immigration judge handling Kharwin’s detention proceedings about his suspected ties to HIG because the information purportedly linking him to the terror group was classified.”
As a result, the judge “freed [Kharwin] on March 30 after he posted a $12,000 bond,” and “placed no restrictions on [his] movements inside the US,” the Post noted.
On Thursday, the suspected terrorist was taken back into federal custody – where he currently remains.
Border Patrol and ICE are both agencies of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Critics of the Biden administration’s border policies slammed the original decision to release Kharwin last year.
An X (formerly Twitter) account run by the Republican National Committee (RNC), stated that the administration “tried to cover it up.”
Rep. Brian Mast, R-FL, called the situation “insane.”
“Joe Biden can’t even bother to pretend like he cares about border security or the safety of Americans,” Mast wrote on X Thursday.
Mast’s House colleague, Rep. Mike Garcia, R-CA, agreed via an X post the following day.
“Under Biden’s watch, a member of a terrorist group was caught and released TWICE,” Garcia noted.
“Our nation’s enemies are infiltrating our border, and this administration is letting it happen,” he continued. “The national security consequences of our open border cannot be overstated.”
Furthermore, new statistics show that in addition to the unprecedented number of migrants crossing the border, the Biden administration’s policies are aiding the arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants by air.
FOX News national correspondent Bill Melugin reported Friday that according to newly release Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data “404,000 migrants have now been flown directly into the U.S. under the Biden admin’s CHNV parole program for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, [and] Venezuelans.”
Melugin explained in an X post that the policy “grants the recipients two years of humanitarian parole in the U.S. and allows them to apply to work.”
“By flying over the border, this population of 404,000 is not included in the southern border numbers,” he added.
Migrants who have benefitted from the policy include 154,000 Haitians, 95,000 Venezuelans, 69,000 Nicaraguans, and 84,000 Cubans.
“Critics say this mass parole program is essentially de facto amnesty, as ICE does not have the manpower or resources to go out and deport them if they stay past their parole grant, and they are not a priority for removal under the current DHS guidelines for ICE,” Melugin noted.
