New Poll: Significantly More Latinos Support Border Wall Than in 2021

CV NEWS FEED // Significantly more Hispanic and Latino Americans support border security measures now than two-and-a-half years ago, per the findings of a recent Axios/Ipsos poll.

As CatholicVote reported earlier this week, the poll “of over 1,000 Latino/Hispanic Americans” was “conducted in partnership with Noticias Telemundo” at the end of last month.

According to Axios, the survey found that 42% of Latino voters supported the construction of “a wall or fence along the entire U.S.–Mexico border … a 12-point jump from December 2021.”

In addition, 38% of respondents indicated that they support deporting all migrants illegally in the United States – a ten point increase from late 2021.

Furthermore, “64% of Latinos said they support giving the president the authority to shut U.S. borders if there are too many immigrants trying to enter the country,” Axios noted. “It was the first time the survey asked this question.”

The New York Post pointed out that the Axios/Ipsos “survey also determined that immigration is now the third-biggest concern among Latino voters.”

“Still, more than half of the respondents said they worry that if the federal government starts mass deportations, it would target all Latinos living in the United States, including legal residents,” the Post continued. “The fear was greatest among first-generation Americans and those who speak only Spanish.”

>> POLL: LATINO VOTERS TURNING ON BIDEN, TRENDING TOWARD TRUMP <<

The same poll showed that from December 2021 to March 2024, “Biden’s average favorability rating among Latinos fell 12 points (from 53% to 41%), while Trump’s favorability rating among Latinos increased by eight points (from 24% to 32%),” CatholicVote reported Tuesday.

“The poll also demonstrated that there is an apparent disconnect between Latino voters’ choice of candidate and party,” CatholicVote’s Tuesday report continued:

While an increasing number of Hispanic and Latino Americans are abandoning Biden in favor of Trump, the numbers don’t seem to translate into gains for the Republican Party as a whole.

Ipsos senior vice president Chris Jackson observed that among the polled Latino voters, “[i]n almost every case, Trump performs better than the Republican brand and Biden performs worse than the Democratic brand.”
