Archdiocese of Los Angeles welcomes record number of catechumens into Church on Easter

CV NEWS FEED // The Archdiocese of Los Angeles welcomed a record number of catechumens and the second-largest ever number of candidates into the Church this Easter.

Reports from dioceses across the country show that they also experienced increases in the number of people entering the Church in 2024.

Angelus News reported that 2,075 catechumens entered the Church throughout the archdiocese, setting a new record. The second largest number of catechumens received into the Church was in 2016, when there were 1,508.

The archdiocese also welcomed 1,521 candidates—those who were already baptized but came into full communion with the Church through confirmation and reception of the Eucharist—which marked a 20% increase since 2016 and a 67% increase in total since 2019.

This year’s number of candidates marked the second largest number since 2016, when there was a record high of 1,719.

“The trend tracks with several other dioceses nationwide, which have reached or in many cases exceeded pre-pandemic levels,” Angelus News reported.

CatholicVote posted on X that the Diocese of Lansing, Michigan experienced a 30% increase in the number of converts entering the Church.

The Diocese of San Diego and churches across Hawaii also reported increases in the number of candidates and catechumens entering the Church.

The Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey, reported that the number of catechumens who entered the Church this year was the largest in over a decade.
