CV NEWS FEED // The pro-life non-profit organization Heartbeat International has submitted an amicus brief against the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over its latest decision to begin selling abortion drugs over the counter.
As CatholicVote previously reported, the Supreme Court is set to hear arguments for the case, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, in the spring. A decision is expected by mid June.
Heartbeat International President Jor-El Godsey announced the decision to submit the brief in a press release:
Our brief highlights the alarming risks posed by the FDA’s actions to make the abortion-inducing drug mifepristone easier to access by treating pregnancy as an “illness.”
[The FDA’s] actions since 2016 have made mifepristone more attainable, allowing women to obtain it without an in-person appointment or a prescription from a licensed physician. This disregard for safety protocols overrides state-level protections for the unborn and violates federal law. By relaxing crucial safety protocols, the FDA is endangering the lives of both women and their unborn babies.Godsey further described the FDA’s decision to allow mifepristone to be available to pregnant women without the sanction of a licensed physician as “unfathomable,” adding that by “relaxing crucial safety protocols, the FDA is endangering the lives of both women and their unborn babies.”
“We are urging the Court to uphold the Fifth Circuit’s order and prioritize the well-being of BOTH mothers and their unborn children,” he concluded.
The case was brought forward to the Court by an appeal from the Biden administration and the drug’s manufacturer, Danco Laboratories, after the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals places a series of restrictions on the drug, including ending mail orders
Walgreens recently announced on Friday that it would begin selling mifepristone at stores in several states where abortion is legal, including New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, California, and Illinois starting this month. CVS is also expected to start providing the drug via prescription in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
