Pope Francis Cancels Engagements a Second Time Due to Flu Symptoms

CV NEWS FEED // Pope Francis canceled his meetings on February 26 due to mild flu symptoms, making it the second day within a week that he was unable to keep his engagements because of poor health.

AP News reported that the 87-year-old pope had previously canceled an engagement with Roman deacons on February 24, citing a “mild, flu-like condition.” He returned to his usual Angelus on Sunday, February 25, but the Holy See Press Office announced the following day that Pope Francis’ Monday audiences had been suspended “as a precaution” due to persisting flu-like symptoms.

This is not the first time that concerns have been raised over the pope’s health. CatholicVote reported in November that Pope Francis was briefly hospitalized due to complications with his lungs. Pope Francis had already been hospitalized two other times in 2023, once for pneumonia and once for abdominal surgery.

In a statement following the pope’s November hospitalization, the Holy See Press Office assured Catholics that the Pope “is in a good and stable condition” and that “his respiratory situation is clearly improving.”
