CV NEWS FEED // The United Nations Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls has published a letter she wrote to the Biden administration that warns against the harmful consequences of permitting men to compete in women’s sports.
According to an Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) International news release, Reem Alsalem initially sent the letter to the US government privately in December, in which she challenged the “proposed rule changes” to Title XIV policy which could allow men who “identify as female” to compete in women’s sports.
The Biden administration is currently attempting to redefine “sex discrimination” to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in Title XIV, which was originally passed in 1972 with the purpose of removing obstacles for women in education and sports.
“Over the years, Title IX [has] allowed women and men to celebrate their independent and incomparable physical limits in equality,” Alsalem wrote:
According to the information received, there is serious concern by women sports associations, women athletes, and those representing them that if passed, the proposed amendment to Title IX would negatively impact on the participation of biological women and girls in sports, including by denying them the opportunity to compete fairly, exposing them to increased risk of injury and resulting in them losing athletic opportunities, public recognition, and scholarship opportunities.
Alselem emphasised the “intrinsic biological advantages” that biological males have over women, which has been traditionally recognized in sports through the “universally recognized principle that a separate category for females is needed for them to have fair and safe opportunities in sports.”
The change in Title XIV policy would not only permit biological males to compete in women’s sports, but also utilize designated female spaces, resulting in “heightened exposure to sexual harassment and voyeurism, as well as a more frequent and accumulated psychological distress due to the loss of privacy.”
