Gal 3:7-14

So, you see, those who believe are the descendants of Abraham. And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, declared the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “All the Gentiles shall be blessed in you.” For this reason, those who believe are blessed with Abraham who believed. For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who does not observe and obey all the things written in the book of the law.”

Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law; for “The one who is righteous will live by faith.” But the law does not rest on faith; on the contrary, “Whoever does the works of the law will live by them.” Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”— in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

A Faith That Does Justice

The faith my parents modeled for me and raised me in has been the greatest gift of my life. Many of my earliest and best childhood memories revolved around experiences at church, and there was never a time I didn’t understand the importance of belonging to a faith community. As an adult responsible for my own continuing faith development, I still cherish the rituals and sacraments, but I also appreciate the less predictable and often messy formation that comes from serving the poor and marginalized among us.

Pope Francis reminds us that faith and service cannot be separated. With gratitude, I recognize that the people I have met at the margins have nurtured my faith in ways I never could have imagined, and my vocation as an Ignatian educator moves me to nudge my students toward this same understanding. How is my faith calling me to work for justice today?

Prayer

Prayer for Generosity

Eternal Word, only begotten Son of God,
Teach me true generosity.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve.
To give without counting the cost,
To fight heedless of wounds,
To labor without seeking rest,
To sacrifice myself without thought of any reward
Save the knowledge that I have done your will.
Amen.
