CV NEWS FEED // Amid a recent wave of tornadoes and storms hitting the Midwest and Southern states, a Catholic church in Louisiana lost two buildings on its property after an EF-2 twister tore through the area.
St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Grand Prairie saw significant damage to their property following the March 31 tornado, according to KATC 3, an ABC affiliate.
First spotted near the church, the tornado traveled 1.82 miles with max wind speeds at 120 miles per hour. According to the National Weather Service of Lake Charles, trees and covered walkways were damaged, an RV was flipped, and a house lost its entire roof. No casualties or injuries were reported.
While the main sanctuary of the church sustained little damage, the tornado heavily damaged the St. Paul’s religious center, ripping off the roof and destroying the church’s carport.
As a result, the parish canceled Mass for April 1 and suspended its Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) program for the remainder of the academic year — except for students preparing for sacraments such as First Communion.
After the storm passed, parishioners and volunteers gathered to assist those working at the church in their clean-up efforts, KATC 3 reported. Parishioners who stepped in to help mentioned their personal history with the church, many of whom had been a part of the parish since their baptism.
According to KATC3, the church underwent a million-dollar renovation in 2023, which the tornado did not affect.
