CV NEWS FEED // Legislation protecting the free speech of pregnancy resource centers from government overreach will go before the Montana Senate’s Judiciary Committee April 2.
Pregnancy Help News reports that Montana’s House of Representatives passed House Bill 388 last month along party lines in a 57-41 vote.
The bill prohibits the state government from requiring pregnancy resource centers to perform, promote, or advertise for abortions. It also states that governments may not restrict the centers’ ability to offer information concerning abortion pill reversals.
The legislation prevents governments from interfering with the counseling services and hiring decisions of pregnancy help centers. It adds that if the government infringes the rights of a pregnancy resource center, the center may sue.
“This protection is needed because there have been government efforts to dictate to pregnancy centers,” bill sponsor Republican Rep. Amy Regier told Pregnancy Help News.
Regier cited the 2018 Supreme Court case, National Institute of Family and Life Advocates v. Becerra, in which the Supreme Court sided with pregnancy help centers against the state of California’s attempt to restrict their free speech.
“In 2023 and 2024, more than 30 measures were introduced in 18 states attacking pregnancy centers,” she added. “Pregnancy care centers affirm life and affirm the dignity of women. Life is a human right and worth respecting and protecting.”
