CV NEWS FEED // Cardinal Robert W. McElroy will be formally installed as the eighth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Washington March 11 during a special Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
The ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. EST with a liturgical procession featuring bishops, priests, deacons, and faithful from across the country, according to a press release from the Archdiocese. The Mass itself will commence at 2 p.m.
Cardinal McElroy, who has led the Diocese of San Diego since 2015, was appointed by Pope Francis Jan. 6 to succeed Cardinal Wilton D. Gregory, whose retirement was accepted upon reaching the customary age.
Cardinal McElroy, a vocal critic of the Trump Administration, outlined the elements he considers essential in shaping his vision for the future of the Archdiocese of Washington, CatholicVote reported in January. These include: “The Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Church; a pastoral perspective where truly love and truth can meet, a dedication to missionary discipleship, and a growing understanding of the real lives of the women and men and children and families, singles, priests and religious that form this vibrant community of faith.”
