CV NEWS FEED // Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-FL, announced Wednesday that she plans to refer four Democratic mayors to Attorney General Pam Bondi for criminal investigation over their “sanctuary city” policies.
Speaking at a House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing Wednesday, the conservative lawmaker and committee member questioned New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu – all Democrats.
Luna told them that their sanctuary policies “are in direct violation with U.S. Title 8, Code § 1324 and is a federal offense.”
“Based on your responses, I am … going to be criminally referring you to the Department of Justice for investigation,” she said to the mayors, holding up several sheets of paper that appeared to be referral documents. “And as soon as I leave here, these will be going over to Pam Bondi.”
“I’m not doing that in an effort to bully you guys,” Luna noted, “but I do believe that your policies are hurting the American people.”
“If you guys continue doing what you’re doing, you’re not going to help anyone,” she stated. “You’re going to hurt more people, and that’s exactly why I’m tired of it. The American people are tired of it.”
“You all speak about a broken immigration system,” Luna continued, “and yet here you guys are aiding and abetting in that entire process.”
Luna said open border policies hurt both American citizens and illegal migrants. This same point has been frequently emphasized by current Trump administration White House Border Czar Tom Homan, who, like many other law enforcement veterans, has argued that a liberal stance on migration is inhumane for all parties involved.

“I do not think you guys are bad people,” Luna told the four mayors, “but I think that you are ideologically misled.”
Luna is a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus and had once called herself a “pro-life extremist.”
Testifying at the hearing, Boston Mayor Wu in particular made headlines for defending her city’s “sanctuary” status.
“One in four Boston residents were born somewhere else,” she said. “All of them chose this country as home, because – like my mom and dad – they believed that, here, where you’ve been doesn’t limit where you’re going; the strength of your character has nothing to do with the color of your passport; and that how hard you work matters more than where you were born.”
Wu, a self-professed Catholic who supports abortion and the LGBTQ movement, notably wore ashes in the shape of a cross on her forehead during the hearing – which took place on Ash Wednesday. Boston has long had a significant Catholic population.
The Boston mayor’s wearing of ashes garnered the criticism of Catholic conservative leader Terry Schilling. Schilling, the president of socially conservative think tank the American Principles Project (APP), accused Wu of “hypocrisy.”
Also during the hearing, Wu appeared to refuse to give Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-KY, a clear “yes” or “no” answer when he asked whether she would have turned a criminal illegal migrant accused of raping a 14-year-old girl over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
“This happened outside the city of Boston,” Wu replied to Comer’s “yes” or “no” question, “but I can tell you whenever someone commits a crime … we hold them accountable.”
When the congressman asked the mayor a second time, “Would you turn that criminal over to ICE,” Wu responded, “We follow the laws.”
“I take that as a ‘no,’” Comer said.
New York City Mayor Adams also made headlines at the hearing for attracting the ire of lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
In addition to Adams’ referral by Luna, members of his own party, including Rep. Robert Garcia, D-CA, called on him to resign – citing the New York mayor’s recent legal issues.
Adams, who was indicted for corruption under the Biden administration last year, is an underdog in his re-election bid.
New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary – tantamount to election in the deep-blue city – will be held in June. As of late Thursday, betting markets strongly favored Adams’ leading opponent, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Last week, Adams thanked President Donald Trump for implementing border policies that he said helped cut the number of illegal migrants arriving in New York City into a small fraction. Last month, Adams met with Border Czar Homan and subsequently appeared with him on FOX News to discuss their shared plan to deport criminal illegal migrants.
