CV NEWS FEED // The family of beloved Catholic radio personality and Detroit native Al Kresta is requesting continued prayers following news that the “Kresta in the Afternoon” host’s cancer diagnosis has taken a definitive turn for the worse.
“With a very sad heart, we learned yesterday that Al Kresta’s cancer has progressed beyond treatment,” Kresta’s longtime friend at Defenders of the Catholic Faith, Steve Ray wrote in a June 12 social media post.
“He’s back home and his 21 grandkids gathered around to say goodbye,” Ray continued: “We don’t know how long he’ll be with us so pray that the veil between heaven and earth is very thin and that Al goes peacefully to be with his Lord.”
According to Kresta’s CaringBridge site, the Ave Maria Radio host began to notice abdominal swelling while working out in the gym in early April of this year. By April 29, he was admitted to the University of Michigan Hospital, where he received a liver cancer diagnosis on May 3.
Kresta, 73, was recruited by Domino’s Pizza founder Tom Monaghan to launch Ave Maria Communications in 1977 and act as its president and CEO, according to a May 9 Detroit Catholic report.
Kresta had formerly worked as a Christian radio and talk show host in the 1980s and 90s before converting to Catholicism, the report stated.
Kresta’s CaringBridge site states that he began palliative care on June 12.
“We are praying for as much lucidity and conversation as we can get while he is still with us,” his daughter, Alexis Love, stated on the site: “We are praying that all of the people closest to him get an opportunity to say goodbye. We are praying that he can make it home for a hospice spell.”
