House votes to hold AG Garland in contempt for holding onto Biden recordings

CV NEWS FEED // The Republican-controlled House on Wednesday voted to hold Biden administration Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for refusing to turn over subpoenaed recordings of President Joe Biden amid Special Counsel Robert Hur’s investigation into the president’s handling of classified documents.

The 216-206 vote fell almost exactly along party lines. All Democrats who voted opposed the measure, and one Republican, Rep. David Joyce, R-OH, broke with his party to vote along with the Democrats.

“We can’t allow the Department of Justice, an executive branch agency, to hide information from Congress,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-LA. “We have important oversight responsibilities, and that is what is being pursued here.”

Joyce, the lone Republican dissenter, stated: “As a former prosecutor, I cannot in good conscience support a resolution that would further politicize our judicial system to score political points.”

“The American people expect Congress to work for them, solve policy problems, and prioritize good governance,” Joyce added. “Enough is enough.”

FOX News reported that “[t]he pursuit of Hur’s audio tapes is part of the House GOP’s wider impeachment inquiry into President Biden, investigating allegations he used his political position to enrich himself and his family.”

“House Republicans halted advancement of a contempt resolution against Hunter Biden, the president’s son, earlier this year after GOP investigators reached an agreement with his attorneys,” FOX added.

In a statement, Garland wrote: “It is deeply disappointing that this House of Representatives has turned a serious congressional authority into a partisan weapon.”

“Today’s vote disregards the constitutional separation of powers, the Justice Department’s need to protect its investigations, and the substantial amount of information we have provided to the Committees,” he claimed.

Following the release of Hur’s special counsel report in February, CatholicVote noted:

President Joe Biden “willfully retained classified” documents at his private residence, [Hur] concluded, but the counsel stated he will not charge the president with a crime due in part to the commander-in-chief’s “significantly limited” memory.

The prosecutor reported that during his official interviews of the president, Biden failed to remember the dates he served as vice president and also could not recall “even within several years” when his son Beau passed away.
